Singapore and Melbourne have roughly the same population (~4M) yet Melbourne is spread out and low-rise, while Singapore is more compressed and high rise. If you think of Melbourne as the size of a basketball, Singapore is like someone has taken the basketball and squeezed it into the size of a tennis ball - everything is a lot closer together. I have just returned from my first visit to Hong Kong, which I would describe as Singapore's tennis ball squeezed down into a golf ball, but with double the population. First impressions were of the very large and impressive bridges and tunnels on the way from the airport to Hong Kong island. The next thing I noticed was the density of the buildings. High-rise everywhere with hardly a gap between buildings, it made where we live in Singapore feel quite spread out. Even at 10:30pm Thursday night, the streets and trains were crowded with locals and tourists.
Coming home I had my first ride on an A380. I have to say that the idea of it was more exciting than the reality - inside it was really just like being on any other plane!
Fascinating for a visit -frightening to live there I suspect. At Imanpa we had less than 1 person for a two hundred square Km.
ReplyDeleteJust another plane?? It is MUCH nice, and quieter too :-)
ReplyDeleteMaybe if you're travelling business class, Paul...!!
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure that my window seat, right on the wing, was the quietest spot to be. The other problem was that the wing curves up a lot and is very wide, so there was even less to see than from oover-wing seats on other planes. Having said all that, I was very pleased to have a ride on an A380.
I'm with Paul - the view from upstairs was lovely!
